Justine often wrestles with control over her emotions. This is a battle that she often losses and due to that fact she'll lash out at the cause of her emotional turmoil. This goes for all emotions: fear, hate, sadness. As soon as the emotion or emotions take root they spiral and her reactions mirror that spiral. If it's a violent emotion Justine is known to act violently and at times rashly as if she's unable to access her thoughts and is being fueled only on emotion. It is the sort of state that slowly wears on her over time. I represent this struggle with a logical voice in her head attempting to calm herself down. This voice, while not explicitly shown in the books, is a common side effect of those with emotional/mental disabilities such as Justine's. When she reaches her breaking point she experiences extreme emotional outbursts that will only be sated with drugs, a White Court Vampire or time.
If drugs are available she'll use them to numb herself from the emotions. The effects vary on the drugs used. If drugs aren't available, or a White Court Vampire, the only solution that Justine has is time. Frantic emotional outbursts are physically draining and in sleep her body and mind is able to reset in a way. It's the equivalent to 'have you tried turning it off and on again'. While it isn't a perfect solution, rest brings her a little bit of control and clarity. Due to the way she feels her emotions once she lets it all out it dissipates until the situation or emotion is encountered again. This can be very exhausting for her and will wear on her health if she isn't careful.
If she has nothing but time available she'll try and find other ways. Distractions which include alcohol, sex or many other different things but in the end her control will slip and she'll fall into the trap of her own emotions. Out of all the distractions sex works best however that's simply dude to her past and relating sex to Thomas, the White Court vampires and that alluring sense of calm.

There is only one other desire that roots as deeply as this and that's the desire to protect and help Thomas. She will do anything to try and keep her emotions straight just as she'd do anything to help Thomas. These two basic thoughts fuel her other actions, choices and wishes.
